Celebrating Green Career Week with Four Seasons Flowers
October 6th–10th marks Green Career Week, a time to shine a spotlight on the exciting, meaningful, and diverse world of “green-collar” careers. At Four Seasons Flowers, we’re proud to be part of this growing industry that not only brings beauty to everyday life but also plays a crucial role in solving some of the world’s biggest challenges.
What Is a Green Career?
The “green-collar” industry is home to more than 100 professions, many of which fall under the field of horticulture—the art, science, technology, and business of plants. People working in these careers, known as horticulturists, impact nearly every part of our lives:
- They grow the food we eat and develop sustainable ways to feed a growing population.
- They design landscapes, city parks, and green spaces that make our communities healthier.
- They innovate new technologies—from drones that monitor crops to systems that conserve water.
- They bring joy through flowers, gardens, and beautiful arrangements (like the ones we create here at Four Seasons Flowers!).
Horticulturists today include plant scientists, drone specialists, landscape architects, florists, and even urban farmers. These careers are anything but ordinary—they’re creative, innovative, and impactful.
Why Green Careers Matter
Did you know the average American can recognize over 1,000 logos and brands, but fewer than 10 plants in their local area? That’s surprising, considering there are over 400,000 plant species worldwide—and they’re vital to our survival.
Plants give us:
- The air we breathe
- The fruits and vegetables we eat
- The fabric in our favorite clothes
- The parks and playing fields where we gather
- The flowers that brighten our homes and special occasions
This is the power of plants, and it’s why horticulturists are so important. They’re helping tackle climate change, food insecurity, and environmental sustainability, all while making the world a more beautiful, healthier, and happier place.
The Need for More Plant Professionals
Despite all of this, interest in plant careers has declined in recent years. In fact, ZERO middle schoolers in national focus groups said they’ve even heard the word horticulture. That lack of awareness contributes to a serious workforce gap—only 61% of the average 57,600 annual job openings in food, agriculture, renewable natural resources, or the environment are currently being filled.
This shortage creates challenges such as:
- Fewer people to grow and innovate our food systems
- Declining enrollment in horticulture programs at colleges and universities
- Plant blindness—the inability to notice and appreciate the plants around us
- Misconceptions and stereotypes about what it means to work with plants
At Four Seasons Flowers, we believe it’s time to change that story. Careers in horticulture are vibrant, meaningful, and essential to the future of our planet.
A Flower-Filled Career Path 🌸
Floristry is just one of the many rewarding paths within horticulture. At Four Seasons Flowers, we see firsthand how working with plants changes lives—whether it’s crafting floral designs that bring comfort, joy, and celebration, or helping customers discover the beauty of nature.
Florists are artists, designers, business owners, and community builders. It’s a career that combines creativity, science, and people skills—all while working with the timeless beauty of flowers.
