Flowers & Allergies: Blooms to Be Aware of When Sending Flowers
Flowers are one of our favorite ways to brighten someone’s day, celebrate a special occasion, or simply let someone know you’re thinking about them. But if your recipient has known allergies, choosing the right flowers can make their gift a little more enjoyable and hopefully a lot less sneezy! 🤧🌸
While everyone’s allergies are different, some flowers tend to produce or release more pollen than others. Here are a few common blooms to keep in mind when ordering flowers for someone who is sensitive to pollen.
🌻 Sunflowers
We LOVE sunflowers for their bright, cheerful personalities, but they can be a little troublesome for allergy sufferers. Sunflowers can produce large amounts of pollen, which may easily become airborne or shake loose when the flowers are moved.
If you know your recipient struggles with pollen allergies, be sure to mention it when placing your order.
🌼 Daisies & Chamomile
Sweet, charming, and perfect for that freshly picked garden look, daisies and chamomile are popular additions to floral arrangements. However, both belong to the Asteraceae family, a plant family that may cause reactions in some people with hay fever or pollen sensitivities.
They’re beautiful, but they may not be the best surprise for your sneeziest friend!
🌺 Dahlias
Dahlias are showstoppers, especially when they’re in season. Their gorgeous shapes, colors, and textures make them a florist favorite, but certain varieties can also have plenty of pollen.
For someone who is particularly sensitive, dahlias may contribute to symptoms like sneezing or itchy, watery eyes.
🤍 Lilies
Lilies are known for their incredible fragrance and dramatic appearance, but those large stamens in the center of the flower can be covered in dusty pollen.
One florist trick is to carefully remove the pollen-bearing anthers. This can help reduce pollen exposure while also preventing that notorious lily pollen from staining clothing, furniture, and linens!
Keep in mind that fragrance itself can also bother some sensitive recipients, even when pollen isn’t the issue.
☁️ Baby’s Breath
Baby’s breath has been a bouquet staple for generations. Those tiny white flowers add softness and texture to an arrangement, but they may cause irritation for some people with allergies or respiratory sensitivities.
If you know your recipient is particularly sensitive, tell your florist so they can suggest another beautiful textural flower or greenery.
💐 Tell Your Florist About Known Allergies
The most important thing you can do when purchasing flowers for someone with allergies is simple: tell your florist!
There are so many gorgeous flowers available, and knowing about a recipient’s sensitivities gives us the opportunity to help guide you toward more suitable options. While no flower can be guaranteed to be completely allergy-free for every person, thoughtful flower selection can help reduce exposure to common irritants.
At Four Seasons Flowers, we care about more than creating a beautiful arrangement, we want the person receiving it to truly enjoy it! If your recipient has known flower, pollen, or fragrance sensitivities, let us know when ordering and our team can help you select an arrangement with those concerns in mind.
Because the best flower delivery is one filled with smiles… not sneezes! 🌷💕
Please note: Allergy sensitivities vary from person to person. This information is intended as general guidance and should not replace medical advice.
